Our Projects

Scholastic OlympicsWORD! is home to Scholastic Olympics, Inc., a grassroots nonprofit that facilitates the academic development of students mainly in Prince George’s County, Md., but also in the DMV. Since 2011, SO has sponsored annual area-wide high school academic competitions in Math, U.S. History, Speech and Spelling. We work closely with the Prince George’s County Public Schools and partner with the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission, Prince George’s County Department of Parks and Recreation. The goal is to celebrate the academic achievements of students the same way we award and support student athletes. A high school breakfast for student athletes is held in early February to jumpstart and promote the annual contests. Scholastic Olympics has partnered, for two consecutive years, with The Shirley Povich Center for Sports Journalism at the Merrill College of Journalism, University of Maryland, College Park, to produce inspiring discussions targeted for parents, coaches and college-bound students.

NBA HoopsNBA Math Hoops came to Prince George’s County, Maryland more than three year ago when Scholastic Olympics contacted CEO Khalil Fuller, then a student at Brown University, Providence, Rhode Island. The math game is based on basketball as it utilizes the statistics of both NBA and WNBA players to reinforce fundamental math skills of elementary and middle school students. The goal is to better prepare students for algebra, geometry, trigonometry, calculus and other advanced math courses in high school and college. In three years, we have grown from developing nearly 200 math champions in a few schools to nearly 1,000 students being actively engaged in Math Hoops in schools in Prince George’s and Ann Arundel counties. College students from Bowie State, Howard and Prince George’s Community colleges have been recruited to help manage the clubs with sponsoring teachers.
