Jesus Guides the Lives of Super Bowl QBs Patrick Mahomes and Jalen Hurts

Kansas City Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes and Philadelphia Eagles’ Jalen Hurts credit their faith in Jesus as the foundation of their lives in interview with Michael Foust of CrossTalk

The Philadelphia Eagles earned the second Super Bowl title in franchise history on Sunday when they defeated the two-time defending champion Kansas City Chiefs 40-22 in Super Bowl LIX.

The Eagles dominated the first half, taking a 24-0 lead. Eagles QB Jalen Hurts added a second-half touchdown throw to wideout DeVonta Smith in a 17-for-22, 221-yard passing performance. He also ran for 72 yards and was named the Super Bowl MVP. Jake Elliott provided four field goals. The Philadelphia defense limited the Chiefs to 275 yards and forced a fourth-quarter fumble by Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes on a sack.

In an interview with Michael Foust of Crosswalk’s Sports Spectrum days before the game, Hurts and Mahomes proclaimed their faith in Jesus is the foundation of their lives.

“It’s important to me every single day. It’s not about football,” Mahomes said. “It’s just giving glory to God for being able to walk around, to live my life, to have a beautiful family, to be able to have impact on others. I’m going to use that stage, and that platform, win or lose, to give glory back to Him, to hopefully bring others closer to Him, and that they can have the same love for life that I have because of that.”

Asked by Sports Spectrum who Jesus is to him, Mahomes responded, “He’s my Lord and Savior. It’s someone that I look up to every single day to decide what I want to do with my life and how I want to live my life. And so Jesus is everything to me at the end of the day.”

Hurts, a two-time Pro Bowl selection, expressed a similar view.

“I think my faith has always been a part of me, where I’ve always wanted to root myself in that and keep Him in the center of my life and everything that I do,” Hurts said. “And so through the highs and the lows, He’s greater than all of them. And that’s something that I can always acknowledge. …I can always lean on and remember.”

Hurts was drafted out of Oklahoma in 2020 after playing three seasons at Alabama. Mahomes was drafted in 2017 out of Texas Tech.

Their first matchup was an instant classic, with Mahomes guiding the Chiefs down the field in the final minutes to set up a game-winning kick. Mahomes’ heroics overshadowed an impressive performance by Hurts, who passed for 304 yards and ran for 70.

After Sunday’s loss, Mahomes told The Washington Post, “They played better than us from start to finish.”
