“Just Pray About It”: Can Christians Go to Therapy?
Can Christians go to therapy—or does seeking professional counseling mean you don’t have enough faith?
For generations, many Christians—particularly in Black communities—have been told to “just pray about it.” Prayer is powerful, but does trusting God mean we should never seek help from a therapist? Can faith, prayer, Scripture, and professional mental health care work together?
In this episode of Emunah, host Dr. Tamara Henry sits down with therapist and ordained minister Rev. Dr. Marva Jones for an honest conversation about Christianity, therapy, mental health, and the stigma surrounding counseling in many Black communities.

Bible Verse
SEPTEMBER 2026
In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who will judge the living and the dead, and in view of his appearing and his kingdom, I give you this charge: Preach the word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage—with great patience and careful instruction. For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths. But you, keep your head in all situations, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, discharge all the duties of your ministry.
2 Timothy 4: 1-5, NIV

Colossians 3:17 says “And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.” Women of the Word takes that command seriously. We provide desserts to the homeless men who visit Our Daily Bread in Baltimore. We have partnered with Hope from the Heart Orphanage in Tanzania, collecting children clothing and toiletries state side and sending them to MWanza. In the past, we have worked with Samaritan’s Purse. Before COVID-19 and all its variants, we visited hospitals and nursing centers, as well as conducted Bible Study in local correctional institutions.
