Spiritual Keys to Open Doors

I know all the things you do, and I have opened a door for you that no one can close. You have little strength, yet you obeyed my word and did not deny me. Revelation 3:8, NLT

All of us walk through several doors everyday of our lives, and we can observe that these doors come in different shapes, sizes, and designs. However, we must ask the questions, “What is a door?” “What is its purpose?”

The Dictionary defines a door as “an entrance or exit point between two areas, typically used to separate two areas. But what purposes do doors serve? Doors have both a literal and spiritual significance.

Seven purposes of doors:

  • Protection: Doors can provide spiritual protection from the enemy. They remind us to stay in God’s light and away from darkness.
  • Restriction and access: Doors can restrict access to certain areas. This allows us to have control over who or what we let into our lives. We use them to keep out those who do not have permission to enter.
  • Stagnation: Doors also can create stagnation in our spiritual lives by keeping us from progressing.
  • Boundaries: Doors remind us to set boundaries for ourselves and others, providing a barrier between right and wrong.
  • Growth and adjustment: Some doors only open when we are ready! Why? Because whatever is behind the door can crush us if we are not prepared. Often the purpose of this door is that it is a sign that God wants us to grow, reflect and readjust before we move forward.
  • Change, Opportunities, or Promotion: Doors can also represent a change in direction or an open door that will bring us closer to our goals and purpose.
  • Closure, End of an Era, or a Beginning: Finally, doors can signify closure in our lives when one chapter is complete, and it is time to move on to the next. This can be a bittersweet moment, but it should be celebrated as an opportunity for growth and a new beginning.

The Bible mentions three literal or physical doors:

The Ark Door (Symbol of Safety)

Genesis 6: 9-18 speaks of entering safety during a time when God’s judgment was being poured out on the earth. Noah and his family were safe inside the Ark, protected from the impending destruction. This door illustrates God as our refuge and protector in times of trouble and chaos. We typically say: “The doors of the church are now open.”

The Temple Door (Symbol of separation & access to God)

1 Kings 6:1-2; 31-35 says that the temple door was made of olive wood and carved with many designs. These included cherubim, palm trees, and open flowers. The doors were overlaid with gold. This was done to represent God’s presence in His Temple among His people. It also signified our separation from Him; only authorized priests could enter this sacred place.

However, the New Testament changed this separation from God through Jesus. In John 10:9, Jesus says He is the door, and whoever comes to Him will be saved by His grace. This means anyone can now access God’s presence without any limitations or requirements if they come through who Jesus is, what Jesus taught, what Jesus commanded, what Jesus promised, and what Jesus did for us on the cross. Yes, Jesus opened a way for us to enter a relationship with God, allowing us to have direct access to Him. He bridged the gap created by our sin; therefore, we no longer need an authorized priest or temple ceremony to be in God’s presence.

The Passover Door (Symbol of redemption)

Exodus 12:1-7;13 says that God instructed His people to paint their doorposts with blood so that death would pass over them as they were spared from its consequences. The Passover foreshadows Jesus’s ultimate sacrifice.

He is so rich in kindness and grace that he purchased our freedom with the blood of his Son and forgave our sins. Ephesians 1:7.
