Tamara’s 5K Walk Testimony (9/10/2022)
I thank God for His love and guidance these past few months as Women of the Word prayed fervently and worked doggedly for the success of our first event – Healthy Family 5K Walk at Prince George’s Community College (PGCC) in Largo, MD on Sept. 10, 2022. I admit that the entire project stretched my faith and forced me to thoroughly examine my relationship with Christ. I knew absolutely nothing about planning a walk/race, although I had participated in quite a few. In fact, I ran a 5K race on my 70th birthday on May 29, 2021, in Leonardtown, MD. I’ve learned that participating is one thing; planning and hosting a race is another.
God orchestrated many miracles during the months of planning, sleepless nights, and tearful prayers. When we first started planning and secured the track at PGCC, I thought we would conduct the entire program and walk at the track. “I“ had envisioned us standing at the dusty track as the local jail chaplain led a prayer and other speakers talked. But God opened the heart of Denise Ware, manager of the Culinary Arts Center. She’s Wellness, Culinary & Hospitality Chair of the Health, Wellness & Hospitality Division at the community college (A Mouth Full). She agreed to partner with WOW and suggested we conduct our opening program at the beautiful new center. And she made available her chefs and kitchens to provide healthy cooking and eating advice as part of our program. God works “exceedingly, abundantly above all we can ask or think.”
Then, I reached out to several community track clubs, seeking help with running or managing the 5K Walk. NOTHING WORKED. NO ONE RESPONDED. NO ONE RETURNED MY PHONE CALLS.TO MAKE MATTERS WORSE, no one was signing up for the event. As July ended, we had only two registrants. We charged $25 because we wanted to purchase Bibles for our local jail in Upper Marlboro. We got plenty of verbal promises but no concrete action.
That lack of response from participants and track clubs drove me to my knees. In prayer, I asked God for guidance because obviously I was barking up the wrong tree, not doing things right, not seeking help from the right people. When I was in total despair, the Holy Spirit made certain this pamphlet from Charles Stanley crossed my path one day:
GOD IS FOR YOU,” it read. “Follow the Lord with joy and confidence! He will provide all you need to accomplish His will. Remember that God is always on your side. He wants you to succeed even more than you do. He is waiting to show Himself strong on your behalf, if you will only trust him and walk in the paths He sets out for you.”
That pamphlet was secured with a paper clip to a document about my new primary care doctor. I was looking for her information to set up an appointment about my left foot.
A day later, unable to sleep, I got out of bed, set at the computer and typed “help with organizing and planning a race.” In His matchless love, God directed me to Race Directors HQ and I met in a zoom meeting with Panos Gonos of Greece 47 days before the event. That one meeting helped me change focus and direction for the event. Panos gave great advice, but we were delayed in beginning to implement it because he was on “holiday.”

When Panos was ready to roll, we found ourselves in a dead heat. In one day, we revised our registration form, while Panos created a dedicated race page on an online platform. Our uncertainty about how to operate changed as we were introduced to a variety of information to assure accuracy with the race. TO GOD BE THE GLORY.
God works “exceedingly, abundantly above all we can ask or think.” God didn’t just send anyone to rescue us and help with organization. He sent a person from Greece, the country where the first recorded Olympic Games were held at Olympia in the Greek city-state of Elis in 776 B.C.
As we entered August, the number of walk registrants inched to eight (8). I tried everything I could think of to promote the walk. I left flyers at every library within a 10-mile radius, local restaurants and emailed every radio station and newspaper I could think of. On August 7, the number of registrants stayed at eight (8). On Saturday, Aug. 6, I even attended a “Thank You” rally for Wes Moore, the Democratic nominee for Maryland’s governor, to distribute flyers and encourage political staffers to promote the walk.
The next day, on Sunday, August 7, when I attended First Baptist Church of Glenarden, leaders announced that a big churchwide event that had been canceled because of bad weather was rescheduled for Sept. 10. My heart sank.
On Monday, August 8, the PGCC PR Office said I was not allowed to post the flyers on campus.
“The flyers do not meet our brand standards,” was listed as the reason.

The team continued to work. We held a zoom meeting on Saturday to review registration procedures and review other tasks that needed to be done. I prepared 80 bibs and put aside 20 ready-to-go bib sheets.

I fasted and prayed on Sunday, Aug. 22. On Monday, August 22, 13 people had registered. With 14 days to go, I still had only 13 registered.

I attended the last Prayer Service in the Park on Saturday August 27 – at 7 a.m. and after the hourlong service, I headed over to Campus Way and put flyers on the doorknobs of every house in the Prince Place area. Then God led me to TD Jakes online who said: “Playing it safe only gets you so far. There’s more waiting for you, but first you must take a BIG step!” Indeed, I see this walk as the biggest, most treacherous step I’ve taken in my life. “I will trust in the Lord!”

On Saturday, when I returned home, God gave me peace. FINALLY!

On Sunday, Aug. 28, Rev. Keith Battle preached: “When God blesses you, it’s going to be worth the wait.” I receive that in Jesus’ name. With 13 days to go, still only 13 people had signed up.

During this journey, several attacks came on those helping me with the race. Two team members got COVID. I got a bad cold. Another member was hit with financial problems. My sister’s car stopped, and she had to pay $1,500 to fix it and nearly $1,000 for a rental to drive to Maryland for the walk. Denise, the Culinary Art Center director, had to have emergency surgery. One plan was to have a Farmers’ Market too but I learned that the farmer over the Farmer’s Market had a stroke.

With 8 days to go, 13 had signed up. I prayed for the Lord’s blessings. “May the Lord my God show me his approval and make my efforts successful. Yes, make my efforts successful!” Psalm 90:17.

With four days to go, 16 people had signed up. One of our youth workers contracted COVID and was quarantined until the day before the walk. Thankfully she tested negative and her grandmother said she could work Saturday, the day of the walk. That was another attack that God thwarted.

I prayed, “Lord, please show yourself strong on behalf of us working in the vineyard for your kingdom.”

Three days to go – 16 people.

Got a call from someone who had 16 in her family and wanted them all to come for free. I offered to cover three only.

Days before the Race, I got an email from Michael Walton, a World-Class, professional Track and Field athlete with a heart for guiding young lives and a passion for community activism. Michael, under the direction of legendary track and field coach Al Joyner, has garnered an international reputation as a top sprinter. He said he would be out of town on Sept. 10 and couldn’t help. Was he a distraction? I asked. [It turned out that he was another assignment from the Lord]

On walk day, 20 people registered. To be honest, I still don’t know what the walk was about and why the Lord did not allow more people to participate. We distributed nearly 1,000 flyers.

Despite the low participation, WOW raised enough money to purchase 400 Bibles for the Upper Marlboro Correctional Facility.

Another benefit I did see were the RELATIONSHIPS: One team member and his son, Darius, bonded as they served as DJs at the track. I’m told folk really enjoyed the duo with some asking for contact information for future gigs.

A church member and I walked together and talked; a friendship was formed. Politician Derrick Coley and his two sons came. His wife was spending the weekend out of town with sorority sisters, so I appreciate him thinking about supporting us.

My sister from NYC and cousin from Tennessee spent a wonderful weekend with my family talking, sharing memories, eating, having fun. One of our speakers who traveled from Richmond was able to provide information to a few participants and spent a few hours with our family.

Another worker who likes to cook got a recipe to share with family. She and Denise talked about working together on another project.

I am reminded of Job 40: 1-5, NLT

After nearly 2 1/2 years a huge project that I was a part of creating has opened its doors. I thank God for allowing me to be a part of an amazing team of women that had a vision and set out to make it come to pass. On top of it all they have asked me to be the Office Manager of this new initiative and I am beyond excited and blessed to level up professionally and grow and learn in new ways.

One thing that I’m so thankful for this year, is the lord blessing our family with our first child. Our son has been reaching all of his milestones, is healthy and happy and for this I am truly thankful.

MARVELOUSLY UNIQUE

There are different ways to know God. I mean to REALLY KNOW Him and appreciate His LOVE for us. A lot of us think we know about LOVE – after all, we get it from parents … our children … our boo … spouses … partners.
